Top Trends to Keep or Ditch Before 2018

2017 is almost ending. Nonetheless, it just gave us new things to experience, new discoveries to further explore and new trends to enjoy. This year, indie music is the new pop. “Old Skool Vans” sneakers and “Supreme” brand shirts hit the 2017 fashion trend. Curly eyebrows, braided eyebrows, peach make up look, no make-up make up the look and much more makeup revolution invaded the internet and took the whole girl community via storm. But not all of it is meant to be kept, not all of it deserves a spot on the upcoming year’s trending topics so here are the top trends to keep or ditch before 2018:

UKAY-UKAY GAMING

Ukay- ukay or secondhand clothes made a huge impact on the fashion industry this year. Who would have thought that this kind of clothing can make someone look fashionable and produce Instagram-worthy photos?

We put this on the keeps because these clothes are super cheap. You can buy an outfit for a hundred pesos and it gives people a chance to fully express themselves in different styles. Also, it gives entertainment to people and a brand new purpose on the clothes. So for us, ukay-ukay gaming should stay until 2018.

FIDGET SPINNER

According to The New York Times, “A fidget spinner, when grasped properly between finger and thumb, allows its operator to spin it rapidly in his or her hand, the duration of its movement extended by ball-bearings embedded in its small frame. It is said to relieve stress.”

Fidget spinners reached their peak on the midyear of 2017. Some say it helps kids to fully focus on something, either academically or socially. While some say it helps cure ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and also reduce the amount of anxiety. But many doctors claimed that these fidget spinners is neither a cure for ADHD nor reducing the amount of anxiety.  Also, some schools banned students from using fidget spinners since it becomes a distraction for kids to participate in school programs. For 2018, Goodbye Fidget Spinners!

SPICY NOODLE CHALLENGE

Spicy Noodle Challenge has been a hit this year. It originated from Korea and invaded the worldwide trend. People know that Koreans are in love with spicy and since drama and kpop songs were famous this year, they also tried the spicy noodles and since not all people can handle spiciness, they’ve created a challenge for it. As you would scroll past the internet, you may see many people joining this challenge. Some completed the challenge but not all are lucky. Some experienced pain in their ears because of “too much spicy” and most experience difficulty in bowel movement. We already proved that this noodle is definitely spicy so for 2018, we should stop this kind of challenges that may risk our health.

UNICORN EVERYTHING

This year had been magical because of the unicorn trends you can find almost everywhere. You can see kids and teenagers wearing unicorn onesies. You can see people line up for unicorn inspired frappes. Rainbows and sparkly things shine all over social media. The question is, aren’t we fed up with this mystical creature with a single straight horn? Let’s just say that this trend somehow gave us hope that these whimsical ideas are true and helped us look into the bright side. Let’s hope that this optimism stays with us until 2018.

BABY SHARK DANCE CRAZE

The Baby Shark song is a nursery rhyme originally produced by Pink Fong, a Korean education startup, but then widely popularized by K-pop stars such as Girls Generation and Red Velvet who have previously covered their songs and performed the dance steps on TV and at their concerts. It has now 720 million views and counting on YouTube. A lot of people may already be annoyed by hearing it almost every day and everywhere, it is almost impossible for them to try not singing along to it because of its contagious tune. Everyone from your family to your friends to your neighbors would probably know the lyrics of the song. It is a trend that is definitely for keeps because like any other nursery rhyme it is and always will be a part of being a toddler.

DISTRESSED CLOTHING

Distressed clothing is a fashion trend that revived this 2017. It’s a type of clothing that is ripped intentionally. It is either on pants or shirts. It swept the fashion industry by a storm and replaced the cropped top era. Some also created their own DIY ideas on ripping their used pants or shirts to make it trendier. For some, it is very creative and fashionable but for most people, it’s just a waste of money on clothes that have less fabric. Also, some overdo their ripping and make their clothes look like rags. So distressed clothing should definitely leave before 2018.

Indeed, it is a difficult yet fun-filled year. We have our own version of ups and downs. We have our own breakdowns. We have the exciting, embarrassing, shocking, and revelation moments this year. Still, we are known for being the strongest race and these moments never stopped our 2017 from being a KABOG year. In behalf of the Cornicles, Merry Christmas and have a wonderful New Year!

PASOK MGA SUKI DANCE CHALLENGE

If you go to Divisoria, you can hear a different form of sales talk. These sellers encourage the people to buy on their store. This inspired the dance craze “Pasok mga suki” that went viral on the internet. This trend shows how creative the Filipinos are and how jolly anad crazy we could be that no matter what problem we are facing, we always put that smile on our face. It was just getting started to be even trendier, so for us, it should still be on keeps for some more time.
