MANILA, Philippines-- More than a hundred families went homeless after a fire broke out on a residential area in Blumentritt St, Barangay Kapasigan Pasig City on Thursday, January 12.
As stated by the Senior Insp. Jerson Montellana, chief of the investigation division of the Bureau of Fire Protection-Pasig, the fire started around 9:48 A.M. and was from the house of Daisy Mainit.
Montellana said that Mainit left her house with the rice cooking on the stove to buy something and when she came back, her house is already on fire.
Based on the statement given to our team by Mr. Kirk Alfonso, one of the victims, he immediately ran out of their house when he saw the thick smoke emerging from his neighbor's house.
He said "Usok pa lang siya nung nakita ko, pero after 3-5 minutes lang , bigla laki na ng apoy ,I save nothing, mas inuna namin syempre ang safety ng isat-isa.”
Alfonso added that this is the first fire accident he encountered and and felt sorrowful about what happened for he had a lot of memories in that house especially of his grandmother who has passed away.
According to Alfonso, the city government already helped them by giving blankets and relief goods. They even offered them an evacuation area but as for Alfonso’s family, they chose stay with their relatives.
The fire was finally put out after two hours. There have been no record of deaths but the estimated cost of damage is around 3 million pesos.
