Down Under: Once in a Super Blue Blood Moon

By Ciarah Clemente
January 31, 2018

To all moon lovers out there, this Wednesday, January 31, 2018, we will witness the rare supermoon blue blood moon according to Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical & Astronomical Services Administration. In line to this, it will take more than 100 years before this phenomenon occurs again. Also, this is the second full moon in a month.

In an article written by Chris Ciaccia of Fox News, the blood moon occurs because the Earth is passing between the moon and the sun, which gives the moon a reddish tint to it. It is caused by light bending around the Earth because of gravity passing around a portion of the atmosphere, more commonly known as a lunar eclipse.

Here in the Philippines, PAGASA said that the best viewing time is between 8:51 pm and 10:07 pm. It can be seen over the Philippine sky as long as there is no clouds and no buildings. The Philippine Astronomical Society posted observation stations so that no Filipinos will miss this infrequent event. Also, this is free and open to the public. Here is the list of the Observation Stations in Metro Manila according to Philippine Astronomical Society.
