Manila, Philippines – On Thursday, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo Año stated in a press release that the local government is responsible for the “crisis” faced by Boracay Island. He said that the agency launched an investigation into the possible liability of local officials over the problem.

“The local government is accountable for the crisis faced by Boracay. They should have enforced environmental laws as well as their own local ordinances,” Año stated.

Secretary Año questioned the assent of the local government units on building establishments in areas classified as forestlands, and therefore intend to carry on investigation. The commercial buildings, some beyond the agreed distance from the coastline, would not be possible without building and business permits issued by the local officials.

Charges will be filed against government officials based on the results.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) issued notices of violation on at least 50 establishments, for their non-compliance with water treatment laws.
